Urbanpod
Mumbai, India
Urbanpod opened as India's first capsule hotel and sits in the Andheri East business district, close to the airport and to the offices that supply most of its guests. The pods are arranged in banks along corridors, each one enclosed, each one with its own light, socket, small screen and lockable storage outside the unit.
What distinguishes it from its Japanese ancestors is the mix of pod types. There are single pods, women-only sections and a larger private pod aimed at couples or at guests who cannot face a sleeping bank at all, which lets the hotel sell to more than one kind of traveller from the same floorplate.
Bathrooms are shared and well maintained, and there is a small lounge and dining area on site. The trade is straightforward: a business-district address at a fraction of the rate charged by the towers around it, in exchange for a bed you enter rather than a room you walk into.
